Craftsmanship

Eight weeks, one maker

  1. Drawing

    01 · Week 1

    Drawing

Proportion is resolved on paper first: full-scale sections, sight lines and the single radius that gives the piece its character.

  2. Material selection

    02 · Week 2

    Material selection

Slabs, boards and cloth are chosen by hand. Anything with a vein or grain that fights the form is set aside.

  3. Making

    03 · Weeks 3–6

    Making

Frames are joined, stone is cut and the body is built by a single maker who stays with the piece from first cut to last.

  4. Finishing

    04 · Week 7

    Finishing

Four grits of hand sanding, then oil or glaze applied in thin coats and left to cure between each.

  5. Inspection and delivery

    05 · Week 8

    Inspection and delivery

Checked under raking light, blanket-wrapped, and delivered into the room by our own team.

Framed Abstract Art in a residential setting

The story

The thinking behind it

Framed Abstract Art began as a question about restraint: how little can a wall décor piece do and still change a room. The answer, in the end, was one clear silhouette and one honest material.

It is made in small runs so the studio can stay close to every piece. Paper was chosen not for novelty but because it ages well, a surface that looks better in its fifth year than its first.

Specify it alone against plaster, or let it sit quietly inside a fuller scheme. It is designed to hold either position without argument.

Designer notes

Atelier Maison Studio

Design direction, Abuja

We draw for the room, not the photograph. If a piece only works from one angle, it is not finished.
  • The rectangular form is deliberately unornamented; the matte finish carries all of the character.
  • Scaled for living room and dining and office settings with generous circulation around it.
  • Sight lines were tested at seated height first, standing height second.

  • Everyday

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners on the matte surface.

  • Marks and spills

Blot immediately with a clean, barely damp cloth and dry at once. Do not rub the surface while wet.

  • Light and heat

Keep out of prolonged direct sun and away from heat sources; natural materials will shift in tone over time.

  • Long term

We can re-oil, re-seal or re-finish any piece at the studio. Contact us rather than replacing it.

  • Abuja

White-glove delivery and placement within Abuja, typically 3–5 working days from dispatch.

  • Nationwide

Blanket-wrapped nationwide delivery across Nigeria, 5–10 working days from dispatch.

  • Lead time

Made to order, approximately 8–10 weeks to dispatch.

  • Returns

14 days on stocked pieces, unused and in original packaging. Made-to-order pieces are final sale.

Any piece in the collection can be re-scaled, re-finished or specified in a different material for a project. Bring us a drawing or a room and the studio will quote within five working days.

Understated in the best way. It doesn't announce itself, it just makes the room feel finished.

  • Beautifully made

Second piece we've bought from the studio. The consistency between orders is what keeps us coming back.

  • Ages well

We specified this for a client project and it photographed beautifully in low afternoon light. The finish is far softer in person than on screen.

  • Specified again

It arrived blanket-wrapped and the team placed it exactly where I wanted it. The weight of it is the first thing you notice, and nothing about it feels light or temporary.
